| Notes : Stephen Stout went home to be with his Lord and Savior on October 21, 2025, surrounded by his family. Steve was born on March 9, 1947, in Seattle, Washington. He grew up in Odessa, Washington, with his parents, Florence and Leo Stout, and his younger brother, Jeff. The two shared a wonderful childhood-spending time at their father's Chrysler dealership and with their grandfather at Lutherhaven. Steve's grandparents gave him a book called "God's Stars," which ignited his interest in astronomy. After graduating from high school, Steve followed in his mother's footsteps and attended Pacific Lutheran University, earning a bachelor's degree in physics. He began his career in Seattle working with computers but soon became deeply involved in the amateur astronomy community. His passion for the night sky eventually led him to an interview for the job of director of the Goldendale Observatory. When the observatory was purchased by the Washington State Parks, Steve was retained as an interpretive specialist. That opportunity launched a remarkable 32-year career with Washington State Parks. As the astronomer at the observatory, Steve dedicated his life to sharing his love of the cosmos and inspiring countless visitors to appreciate the wonders of creation. He was known for his loyalty, hard work, and patient mentorship of dozens of interns over the years. His enthusiasm for astronomy extended far beyond work hours-he was active in local and regional astronomy groups and kept up with the latest research and discoveries. As his granddaughter, Emily, said, "Grandpa basically knows everything about space." He always dreamed of going up in a spaceship someday-a dream that perfectly captured both his love of adventure and his lifelong fascination with the stars. Steve was a devout Lutheran and a devoted member and leader of Christ the King Lutheran Church. He shared his musical gifts on the guitar, piano, and trumpet during worship services, and often sang, read Scripture, and participated in church projects and outreach activities. Steve found joy in blending his faith and his love of astronomy-hosting Easter sunrise services at the Observatory, writing a Bible study on the constellations, and teaching camp staff about the stars at Lutherhaven. He did his best to instill in his family a daily habit of Scripture reading and a thoughtful, personal approach to the stories of the Bible. One of the greatest blessings of Steve's life came after moving to Goldendale, when he met the love of his life, Barbara Kee. Introduced by mutual friends at rehearsals for the community Christmas cantata Barb directed each year, their connection was instant. Barb fondly recalls standing for 30 minutes in the snow one evening after rehearsal while Steve worked up the courage to ask her out. They became engaged three months later and married on June 23, 1984. For the next 41 years, they were rarely apart. Together they raised two daughters, Catherine and Kari, of whom Steve was exceedingly proud. In addition to his love of astronomy and music, Steve enjoyed playing trumpet in the Gorge Winds Community Band, Star Trek, photography, Marvel movies, and listening to great music of all kinds. He also served with the Friends of the Goldendale Library and cared deeply about preserving and enriching the community's culture. Steve was dearly loved and will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. He was preceded in death by his parents, Florence and Leo Stout. He is survived by his brother Jeff (Jone) Stout; his beloved wife, Barb; his daughters Catherine (Joseph) Perry and Kari (Philip) Munson; and 10 cherished grandchildren-Heather, Bethany and Henry Munson; Emily, Elise and Elizabeth Doyle; and Landan, Collan, Josilan, and Madilan Perry. A memorial service celebrating Steve's life will be held at Christ the King Lutheran Church in Goldendale on November 22 at 2 p.m. |

| Born : | 04 Dec 1919 | Goodview, Virginia | - |
| Died : | 14 Jul 2016 | Roanoke, Virginia | - |
| Age : | 96 |
| Notes : An amazing woman who always wore a smile, Martha Saunders Whitesell, 96, of Roanoke, Virginia, died on Thursday, July 14, 2016. Born on December 4, 1919, in Goodview, Virginia, to William Abbott Saunders and Edna Hawkins Saunders, she was raised in Moneta, Virginia. She moved to Roanoke in 1945 and, in 1953, she married Harry Clifton Whitesell. Enjoying a career of more than 30 years at Blue Cross & Blue Shield, she retired in 1982, having made many lifelong friends. Her church family played a vital role throughout her life. One of nine children, Martha, her siblings and parents filled an entire pew at Bethlehem Methodist Church, never missing a Sunday service. After moving to Roanoke, Martha joined Belmont Methodist Church, where cousins arranged a blind date with her future husband, Clifton. Raising their daughters in southwest Roanoke, they became long-time members of Raleigh Court United Methodist Church. Martha and Clifton made countless friendships at church, many of which became life-long bonds. Martha was an avid bridge and canasta player and relished participating in many bridge and canasta clubs. She hosted regular club meetings, always delighting in having people in her home. She loved her home and neighbors, who became family, some to the third generation. Exercise was also a passion. She made numerous friends at the Lewis Gale Cardiac Rehab program, where she exercised regularly. For her 90th birthday, she received a treadmill so she wouldn't miss a workout due to inclement weather. Many of the standard clichés about being a nice person actually applied to Martha. She truly never met a stranger, and focused much of her life on doing for others. She loved growing tomatoes because "it's so much fun giving them away," she would say every summer. Martha connected with all ages and types of people, and her cheerful disposition always led to new friendships. She lived by the motto resting atop her kitchen sink: "If you see someone without a smile, give them one of yours." And smile she did, exuding kindness and patience at every turn. Martha used to tell her daughters, "Take each day as it comes and make the best of it; that's all we can do." She practiced what she preached, greeting every day with a smile and a positive attitude. She repeatedly told others how blessed she was to have so many good friends and family members, a fact she never took for granted. But those who had the pleasure of knowing Martha understood that just being friends with such a loving and kind woman was a blessing all onto itself. Martha was preceded in death by her husband in 1980; brothers James, Hillary, Riley, and Spottswood; sisters Virginia, Lelia, and Nellie, many sister- and brothers-in-law, and her granddaughter, Morgan. She is survived by her daughter, Brenda Whitesell, and husband Marty Heck, of Penhook, Virginia; her daughter, Karen Whitesell, and husband Bennett Rushkoff, of North Potomac, Maryland; grandchildren, Rebecca and Jacob Rushkoff, also of North Potomac, Maryland; twin sister Mary Mitchell of Vinton; first cousins, many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and friends. Martha loved and was beloved by her extended family of relatives and friends. The family will receive friends on Monday, July 18, 2016, from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. at Oakey's South Chapel, 4257 Brambleton Ave. The funeral will be on Tuesday, July 19, 2016, at 11 a.m., at Raleigh Court United Methodist Church, 1706 Grandin Road, followed by a graveside service at Evergreen Memorial Cemetery |
