V., in 1845, and is of German parentage. His father, Anton Falkenberg, came to the United States in the early '4os and afterward followed the trade of a cabinetmaker and millwright, which he had thoroughly learned in the old country. In 1845 he removed to Detroit, Mich., and there remained for ten years, after which he went to Chicago. In 1865 he retired from active business, but continued to reside in Chicago until his death. Politically he was a Democrat, and in religion a Catholic. His first wife, whom he married in Utica, N. V., was Gertrude Schumacher, and they became the parents of six children, three now living: John Peter; Andrew, a business man of Chicago: and Kate, also of Chicago. After the death of his first wife he married Susan Berger, by whom he had three children: Prank A., who is a druggist in Chicago; Caroline, who is a teacher of music in a convent at Green Bay, Wis.; and Amelia, who is similarly engaged in St. Louis. The third wife of Mr. Falkenberg was Caroline Stitcher, who survives her husband and resides in Chicago. The education of our subject was commenced ill Detroit and completed in Chicago, where he attended a parochial school conducted by Christian Brothers. He gained a knowledge of business matters through attendance at Bryant & Stratton's Commercial College in Chicago. Under his father he learned the carpenter's trade and afterward also became a practical tinner. When about twenty three years of age he opened an office at Twentyninth and State streets, Chicago, and became a real estate dealer, buying and selling property south of Twentyninth street. When the colony was formed to come to Colorado in 187o, Mr. Falkenberg determined to join them, and in the fall of that year located in the upper end of Wet Mountain Valley. In the spring of the following year he removed to Pueblo, where he worked as a carpenter for two years. At the time he came to this state, the railroad extended no further than River Bend, one hundred miles from Denver, and the remainder of the journey was necessarily made by wagon, but while he was living in Pueblo, the railroad was extended to that point. In the early part of 1873 he moved back to the valley and locating a ranch, followed his trade, while at the same time he began the improvement of the property. After three years on the ranch he went to Ula, a village two miles north of Westcliffe. In 1876 he started in the mercantile business there, putting up a building in which he carried a stock of goods. From 1879 to 1888 he also served as postmaster of the village. Starting on a small scale, as his trade grew his stock was enlarged, until filially he had a complete assortment of goods. Westcliffe having been started, Mr. Falkenberg came here in 1888, and erected a stone store building, fifty five feet deep. Two years later he built the residence he has since occupied. One year after coming to this village he increased the size of his store building to one hundred and twenty five feet depth, so that he had 25x125 feet for his large stock of merchandise. Besides this, he put up the adjoining building, 25x70 feet, and now has his dry goods in a separate building across the street. During all these years he has continued to operate his ranch of one hundred and sixty acres, which lies about six miles west of town and on which he raises fine crops of grain, potatoes and hay. Politically Mr. Falkenberg has always affiliated with the Democratic party. In 189293 he served as county treasurer, and has also been a member of the town board. For seven years he has been identified with the school board. In religion he is a Roman Catholic. He has assisted in developing the mining interests of Custer County, having a tunnel seven hundred and fifty feet on a promising prospect, and is also interested in the Bull Domingo mine. August 8, 187o, he married Barbara Lanzendorfer, of Chicago, but a native of Rochester, N. Y. They became the parents of four sons and three daughters. all of whom are living but one daughter. They are named as follows: Charles William, who assists his father in the store: Amelia and Carrie, who conduct the dry goods store on the opposite side of the street front the main store; Frank A., who helps his father in business; Grover Edward and Henry. |

| Notes : Ruth Ellen Margaret (Brummer) Dubbert was born December 16, 1929 in Tipton, Kansas, the fifth child of Frank and Katherine (Ketter) Brummer. She died peacefully on Monday, December 23, 2019 at the Downs Care and Rehabilitation Center surrounded by loving family members. During her early years Ruth Ellen attended Fairmont Country School and later Tipton Catholic grade and high school. In high school she was a Tipton Cardinals cheerleader and graduated in 1947. Following high school Ruth Ellen worked as a telephone switchboard operator in Osborne, Kansas. On October 16, 1951 Ruth Ellen married the love of her life Leon Dubbert at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Tipton. This union of love extended for 64 years and was blessed with six children, 12 grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren. Leon and Ruth Ellen made their first home on a farm west of Cawker City along Oak Creek. In 1963, the family moved to Cawker City due to the development of Waconda Lake. This house in Cawker City became their home for the next 56 years. Ruth Ellen was a devoted and loving wife and mother, placing the care and welfare of her husband and children above her own interests. Despite devoting many hours to homemaking, jobs outside the home, and other commitments, she always made her family the highest priority. She was always present at the many school programs, athletic events, and other community and church activities. She also devoted time as a Girl Scout Leader, actively supporting her sons in Boy Scouts, and in respect to her father's service as a veteran, was a member of the VFW Auxiliary. Her many talents and love for family were demonstrated in so many ways. She was a wonderful homemaker, always tending to the needs of family and home. She was an excellent and avid cook, gardener, canner, and a seamstress who made countless articles of clothing and crafts. Along with these many talents Ruth Ellen was truly exceptional in the art of quilting. She devoted thousands of hours to this craft, creating true works of art. Her quilts were created out of love and devotion to family, as she has gifted uniquely designed quilts to every child, grandchild, and great-grandchild. These quilts, all lovingly signed and dated by Ruth Ellen, will be cherished by the family for many years to come. Throughout her life Ruth Ellen was devoted to her Catholic faith. She was an active member of Sts. Peter & Paul Church in Cawker City and a member of the Catholic Ladies Guild. Her devotion to faith carried her through the good times and the hard times, and was an inspiration to all who knew her. Just as she lived, her faith was devoted to the needs of family and friends, as she constantly updated her "prayer list" to be attentive to the needs of others. Ruth Ellen was preceded in death by the love of her life Leon, who passed away in 2015. She was also preceded in death by her parents, brothers Edwin and Donald, sisters Doris Marie Fogo and Vivian Steerman, and great-grandchild Ashley Olsen. Ruth Ellen is survived by sons Randy (Kathy) Dubbert of Downs, Kevin (Tricia) Dubbert of McPherson, Dale (Linda) Dubbert of Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Kelly (Kim) Dubbert of Overland Park; daughters Denise (Tom) Gaughan of Leawood and Darcel (Barry) McPeak of Glen Elder; twelve grandchildren: Rachel (Joe) Olsen, Trevor Dubbert, Brett (Tami) Gaughan, Jonathan (Katelyn) Gaughan, Todd (Stephanie) Dubbert, Chad (Abby) Dubbert, Mackenzie McPeak, Brian Dubbert, Anna Dubbert, Kate (CJ) Kadel, Sarah Dubbert, and Sister Mary of the Beatitudes - Abby Dubbert; two step-grandsons: Jared (Leslie) Berkstresser and Bradley (Amanda) Berkstresser; thirteen great-grandchildren: Paul, Lily, Izzie, Lena, Gracie, Leon, Brennon, Avery, Magdelene, Tommy, Brogan, Emma, and Shae; two step great-grandchildren Avery and Isaha; her brothers Wendell (Delores) Brummer of Downs and Wayne Brummer of Great Bend; sister Carol Suter of Aurora, Colorado; brothers-in-law Vernon Steerman of Alton, Robert (Mary) Dubbert of Tipton, and sister-in-law Doralyn Dubbert of Downs. |

| Notes : Leon Theodore Dubbert was born July 8, 1925, on the family farm north of Tipton, Kansas, the son of William and Caroline (Carl) Dubbert. He died peacefully Friday, October 30, 2015, at the Golden Living Center of Downs, surrounded by his loving family. During his early years, Leon attended Sunflower Country School and spent his high school years at Tipton High School graduating with the Class of 1943. After graduation, he was needed on the farm to assist his ailing father with farm work and to help with his invalid brother. Leon also assisted several area farmers during this time. On October 6, 1951, he was united in marriage to the love of his life Ruth Ellen Brummer at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Tipton. To this union, 6 children were born. Leon & Ruth Ellen made their home on a farm west of Cawker City along Oak Creek. In 1963, the family moved into Cawker City because of the building of a diversion ditch for Waconda Lake. This "temporary" house in town became their home for the next 52 years. Leon always enjoyed visiting with people and never met a stranger, always willing to help someone in need. He had a love for reading throughout his life and had a gift for retaining much of what he read. He was especially fond of US History books and family history. He had his own "library" of books and, when relaxing, always had a book or magazine in his hand. Leon was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, and Lions Club all of Cawker City. He was a past Grand Knight, served on the Library Board and the Tree Board, where he helped plant, water and care for numerous trees throughout Cawker City. Leon served as a Boy Scout Leader and all 4 of his sons were Scouts, attending many summer camps at Camp Hansen, Kirwin. He received the St. George Leader Award from the Salina Diocese for his dedication to Scouting and also his faith. Attending Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico with his wife and 2 sons Dale and Kelly was a highlight as well as seeing his grandson achieve Eagle Scout. Besides his chosen profession of farming and raising cattle, Leon worked a number of years for the USDA office doing measuring work for area farmers. He also made truck deliveries for Barnett Mfg. and Lloyd watermelon farm. Leon also spent countless hours of volunteer work delivering meals for the Senior Center, distributing commodities and assisting throughout the community that he loved. Leon always had a special connection to the land and was honored with the Kansas Wildlife Habitat Conservation Award in 2005 for planting and maintaining thousands of trees on his farm south of Waconda Lake. Leon was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Gerald, William and Virgil (infant), and sisters Helen Muths and Kay Wagner, and great-grandchild Ashley Olson. Leon is survived by his loving wife of 64 years Ruth Ellen of the home, sons Randy (Kathryn) Dubbert of Downs, Kevin (Tricia) Dubbert of McPherson, Dale (Linda) Dubbert of Albuquerque, NM, Kelly (Kim) Dubbert of Overland Park, daughters Denise (Tom) Gaughan of Leawood, and Darcel (Barry) McPeak of Glen Elder. Twelve grandchildren Rachel (Joe) Olson, Trevor (Andrea) Dubbert, Brett (Tammy) Gaughan, Jonathan (Katelyn) Gaughan, Todd (Stephanie) Dubbert, Chad (Abby) Dubbert, Mackenzie McPeak, Brian Dubbert, Anna Dubbert, Kate Dubbert, Sarah Dubbert and Abby Dubbert.
